Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Jyoti Basu passed away on Sunday at 11.47 a.m. (IST), as he was suffered with multi-organ failure. 95-year-old Jyoti Basu, was admitted to the AMRI hospital, salt lake city, Kolkata on January 1, with acute respiratory failure bordering on pneumonia. Jyoti Basu, the finest Communist leader, remained chief minister of West Bengal for 24 years in his long political career. He was selected West Bengal Chief Minister for 5 times, and served the state from 1977 to 2000.
Jyoti Basu was born on 8 July, 1914 as Jyoti Kiran Basu into an upper middle-class Bengali family in Kolkata. He completed his undergraduate education and received the honours in English from the Hindu College. After completing his undergraduate studies in 1935, Basu set out for England for higher studies in Law.
